SS Normandie
(France 1935-1942)
This is the ship that most maritime historians agree was the greatest of them all - but her life was tragically cut short.
The Normandie is seen by Ocean Liner enthusiasts as THE epitome of the Ocean Liner. She was fast, stylish and modern. She vied with the Queen Mary to win the Blue Riband throughout the late 30s. She had considerably less power than the Queen Mary but due to her more advanced hull design could probably go faster - she never got the chance to properly prove this in the long term however.
Her interiors were the epitomé of French Art Deco style & grace, but were considered by some to be slightly overwhelming, which meant that the Queen Mary actually took more passengers and was more popular.
Sadly, through sheer incompetence on the part of the American Navy, she burned and capsized at her berth in New York while being converted into a much-needed troop carrier during World War 2.
