1989 model year Minis (Brochure released in late 1988) :
Rover's Brochure from the end of 1988 was big news for Austin Rover fans.  New modern colours and trims were introduced to the entire Cars range, including the Mini.  In a way, they were looking to the 90s, and moving on from the 80s.

The brochure reveals the re-freshed Mini City and Mini Mayfair (brighter colours and trim, new wheel covers etc) and introduces the Mini Sky, Mini Rose, and the very, very important and significant Mini Racing and Mini Flame special editions.
We had one of the first Mini Racing Greens.  It ran on unleaded fuel, even though it didn't say that in the brochure.  It attracted HUGE attention because it was the first white-roofed Mini for nearly 20 years.  It also marked the start of the big Mini revival which was to continue into the next century.

Mini SKY, Mini ROSE, Mini RACING (green), Mini FLAME (red)

These cars were hugely significant, being the first British production Minis with contrast painted roofs since the 60s.  They initiated the 90s comeback of the Mini, which in turn let to the new MINI.
The Racing Green and Flame Red were dramatic successes, and were repeated later the same year (see below) with alloys and sporty gearing.  These led directly to the reintroduction of the Cooper the following year which then became the best selling Mini Model through the 90s.

1990 : Mini Flame Red / Mini Racing Green / Mini Check Mate Brochure (12 pages)

The Flame Red and Racing Green of 1989 had been the beginning of the Mini's big comeback, but now Rover decided to drive the point home.  They re-launched this edition, improved it, and added the checkmate (black & white).

With alloy wheels (instead of white wheelcovers, black trim (instead of grey) and a lowered final drive ratio the 2nd generation of the "Flame Red" and "Racing Green" were sure fire hits.  They were joined this time by the Mini Checkmate and for the first time in 20 years, a genuine Mini Cooper was available via the Cooper Conversion kit.

1990 Mini Studio 2 Brochure (4 pages)
In original condition, the Studio 2 must certainly be one of the rarest Mini Special Editions now.  Overshadowed by the sporty Minis and Mini Coopers that were reintroduced around the same time, the Studio 2 was similar to the special editions that had appeared throughout the 80s.  A logo, different seat trim, a radio/cassette, a particular paint, and opening rear windows, but otherwise mechanically identical to the Mini City on which it was based. BUT this is the reason why now they should be treasured.  RARE MINI ALERT!

1993 : Mini Italian Job Special Edition Brochure (8 pages)

This is still one of my very favourite special editions.

The white grille was unique, as were the white alloys and combined with the black bumpers and body coloured mirrors, they were quite nicely different to the Cooper of the time, which makes it so sad to see them being simply turned into yet another Cooper clone.
