Cunard's R.M.S. Caronia, 1949
The purpose built cruise ship Caronia was designed to have a yacht-like appearance with a clipper bow, huge single funnel and tripod mast. An open air lido, swimming pool and terraced decks added to the luxury. Six of her lifeboats were fitted with engines to shuttle passengers ashore during cruises. The Caronia was a two-class ship, first and cabin class, with the emphasis on large cabins. The fact that Princess Elizabeth launched the ship and that the Duke of Edinburgh was a passenger on the first cruise led to Royal associations such as the Balmoral and Sandringham restaurants.
