QUEEN MARY 2 COMPLETES FINAL SEA TRIALS AND BREAKS THE 30 KNOTS BARRIER

Cunard now operating the 2 fastest ocean liners in the world

Queen Mary 2 has just completed her final trials where she broke the 30- knots barrier. At one point Captain Warwick, Master Designate of Queen Mary 2, took the helm and achieved 30 knots during the various speed runs undertaken. As well as being the largest, longest, tallest, widest and most expensive passenger liner ever built – her speed means she can go further and faster, offering six-day transatlantic crossings and an unbeatable range of cruise itineraries.

With the introduction of Queen Mary 2, Cunard will operate the two fastest ocean liners in the world – with Queen Mary 2 taking over the mantle of QE2 on the famous transatlantic run and in 2004 QE2 commencing her home coming season to Southampton with cruises around the Mediterranean and northern waters.

Once again Queen Mary 2 was put through her paces during the trials and passed with flying colours surpassing the expectations of those on board. Queen Mary 2 returned to dry-dock this week where she will remain until her historic Handover to Cunard just before Christmas.

Peter Shanks, Cunard’s Senior Vice President Europe, says:

“These trials have reaffirmed what we have thought all along – that Queen Mary 2 will be the finest transatlantic ocean liner ever. Her sea-keeping capabilities are second-to-none and we are confident that the vessel will stun guests when they board for the first time in January 2004”.

Queen Mary 2 will be named by Her Majesty the Queen on 8 January and will depart Southampton on her Maiden Voyage to Fort Lauderdale four days later.
