A ROYAL FLUSH

The three most famous ships amongst UK adults, according to a new survey, were all named by The Queen.

The YouGov survey, which included a random sample of 2,065 adults, weighted to represent the population as a whole, showed that the most recognised ship in unprompted responses from the general public is Cunard's former flagship Queen Elizabeth 2, closely followed by the company's current flagship Queen Mary 2, and the newly-launched Queen Elizabeth.

The survey also targeted those who had cruised in the last five years; the top three most recalled ships comprise Cunard's total current fleet! In first place is Queen Mary 2, followed by Queen Victoria - named by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in 2007 - and then Queen Elizabeth.

Peter Shanks, Cunard's President and Managing Director, says:

“It cannot escape notice that our competitors vie with each other in the hunt for ever more exotic celebrities to name their ships. But these are rapidly forgotten by the public - while namings by Her Majesty live on in the public mind.

“Each of Cunard's ships have been named by senior female members of the Royal family, and it is part of our tradition - just as Cunard is part of British tradition”.

Other findings in the survey, which was commissioned by Carnival UK and conducted last November, also show Cunard delivers against the key attributes which are important to cruisers. In many areas which recent cruisers identified as being the most important aspects of cruising, Cunard outclassed its rivals - being ahead in such areas as food quality, service standards, trustworthiness and standard of accommodation.

Concludes Peter Shanks:

“We have always believed Cunard to be unsurpassed at meeting aspirations of cruise enthusiasts, and over and over again this research confirms what we know. Our impeccable and traditional standards, coupled with the youngest fleet in the business, mean we are being appreciated by a growing number not only of seasoned cruise travellers, but by those who aspire to join them”.

More detail of the research will be revealed this week.

Notes to Editors

The survey was conducted online by YouGov plc. It included a semi-targeted sample of 4,000 UK adults aged 18+, part boosted by recent (last 5 years) cruisers and part boosted by adults wishing to cruise in the next 10 years. The sample was weighted by demographics to be representative of the demographic profile of UK adults aged 18+. Fieldwork was carried out between 24 and 29 November 2010.
